Women’s national team suffer two straight defeats against United States

Korea Republic women’s national team slumped to two defeats in as many games against the United States.

Colin Bell’s charges lost two matches in a row against the hosts – 4-0 on Sunday and 3-0 on Wednesday – as the Taegeuk Nangja have failed to claim an elusive victory over the North American powerhouse (four draws and 13 defeats in the head-to-head record).

The visitors lost 4-0 in the first game staged at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado on Sunday.

First-choice goalkeeper Kim Jungmi started alongside a new-look rearguard, with forward Go Yoona – who had made her senior debut as a centre-back against the Philippines in April – Hong Hyeji and Lee Eunyoung at the back three; Choo Hyojoo and Kang Chaerim on the flanks, Cho Sohyun, Ji Soyun and Lee Youngju in midfield; Casey Phair and Choe Yuri up front.

Cho Sohyun and Ji Soyun tried their luck in the opening exchanges, although the game unfolded in favour of the United States: quickfire goals from Mallory Swanson and Tierna Davidson put the hosts ahead after 38 minutes.

Swanson and Davidson struck again in the second half, as the visitors were kept at bay throughout the encounter.

Three days later, Bell made three changes in the second match held in Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota: captain Kim Hyeri, Jeon Eunha and Lee Geummin started in place of Go Yoona, Hong Hyeji and Cho Sohyun respectively in the starting line-up.

The Taegeuk Nangja were dealt an early blow with Crystal Dunn putting her side ahead after 13 minutes, but managed to regroup and fight back against the hosts. Ji Soyun saw her free-kick swerve just wide of the target on 30 minutes, as the visitors began to claw their way back into the game.

However, it was the hosts that put the result beyond doubt after the interval. Sophia Smith capitalised on a misjudged pass from Lee Youngju to double the lead on 67 minutes, before Lily Yohannes made it 3-0 with eight minutes remaining.
