Team Klinsmann held to 1-1 draw with El Salvador

Korea Republic men’s national team have failed to end their winless streak.

Jürgen Klinsmann’s charges were held to a 1-1 draw by El Salvador at Daejeon World Cup Stadium on Tuesday, as Hwang Uijo’s opening goal four minutes after the restart was cancelled out by Alex Roldan with three minutes remaining. Having failed to claim a win in four matches – two draws and two defeats – under the guidance of the new coach, the Taegeuk Warriors are set to travel to Europe for another series of friendlies in September.

Klinsmann made four changes to the side that had faced Peru last week, whilst converting the formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1. Cho Guesung got the nod ahead of Oh Hyeongyu up front, with Lee Kangin, Lee Jaesung and Hwang Heechan supporting the lone striker.

Hwang Inbeom and Park Yongwoo started in defensive midfield, with the latter replacing Won Dujae who had suffered an injury during the match against Peru. Kim Jinsu, Park Jisu, Jung Seunghyun and Seol Youngwoo at the back, with the fullbacks starting in place of Lee Kije and Ahn Hyunbeom respectively; captain Kim Seunggyu between the sticks.

Despite the drizzling rain before the match, 39,823 fans flocked to the stadium to support the Taegeuk Warriors. Buoyed by the vociferous support, the men in red surged forward from the outset with Lee Jaesung firing a warning shot from the right side of the area after five minutes. Four minutes later, Cho Guesung glanced a header off a Kim Jinsu cross just wide of the target.

Lee Kangin picked up where he had left off last week, causing all sorts of problems for the opposition to carve out some opportunities to score. But whilst he struggled to find the net midway through the first half, Hwang Inbeom’s effort from the edge of the area was denied by Tomas Romero.

With his side unable to break the deadlock, Klinsmann responded by bringing Hwang Uijo on for Lee Jaesung after the interval to make a straightforward approach with two strikers up front.

Hwang rose to occasion four minutes into the second half, latching on to a low pass from Hwang Heechan before turning around two defenders to fire home with his right foot.

But as if the slender lead was not enough, Klinsmann reinforced the attack with the introduction of Son Heungmin on 69 minutes. Oh Hyeongyu then came off the bench to replace Cho Guesung, as the hosts went all out on attack.

Despite pouring the waves of attack, they failed to score another goal. It was the visitors that fought back against the run of play, with Alex Roldan equalising with a diving header off a free-kick in the closing minutes.
