The spirit and effort of Taegeuk Warriors touched people’s hearts. Although Korea Republic National Football Team failed to advance to the Round of 16 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, they crashed out the defending champion, Germany, out of the World Cup.

At the final round of the group match for Group F which was held at Kazan Arena, Russia on the 28th, the National Team won against the 1st of FIFA Ranking team, Germany, by the score of 2-0. Team Korea finished the World Cup as the 3rd place of Group F with 3 winning points (1 win, 2 losses, 0 goal difference). In Group F, Sweden (2 wins, 1 loss, +3 goal difference) and Mexico (2 wins, 1 loss, -1 goal difference) advanced to the Round of 16 and Germany (1 win, 2 losses, -2 goal difference) finished the World Cup, ranking the last within the group.

Team Korea kicked off with 4-4-2 formation. SON Heungmin and KOO Jacheol played at the very front with MOON Seonmin, JUNG Wooyoung, JANG Hyunsoo and LEE Jaesung supporting them at the center of the field. KI Sungyueng could not make it to this match due to his injuries from the match with Mexico. JUNG Wooyoung replaced KI Sungyueng’s place and made his name on the start and JANG Hyunsoo played in cooperation with him as a midfielder, instead of playing as a defender as he did in the last two games. The four defenders were HONG Chul, KIM Younggwon, YUN Youngsun and LEE Yong, with JO Hyeonwoo keeping the goal post.

Korea Republic had more chances during the game. At the first half, JUNG Wooyoung shot a non-spinning shooting at the front of the arc for his free kick. SON Heungmin stretched his foot out after Manuel Neuer’s mistake, but it was tipped over by Neuer. Later, SON Heungmin made another shot when the ball hit Germany’s defender at the right side of the penalty box, but the ball floated over the goal post. On the other hand, Germany’s shots were blocked by Korean defenders or floated way over the goal post.

Finishing the first half by the score of 0-0, Korea Republic managed to defend Germany at the beginning of the second half. At 2’ of the second half, Leon Goretzka headed the ball that was crossed in from the side, but JO Hyeonwoo tipped it over. The shooting made by Timo Werner at the front of the penalty box got out of the goal post.

As Germany pulled their offensive line up, more counter-attack chances were made for Korea. Korea tried to penetrate through the back space of German defenders but could not finish into a goal. Fierce game went on, but both teams did not score a goal.

As Sweden was winning at the other match of the Group F between Sweden and Mexico, the chances for Korea Republic to advance to the Round of 16 were crashed out. But Taegeuk Warriors did not give up and scored two goals at the extra time after the second half. KIM Younggwon hit the net, taking the opportunity of German defender’s mistake, and SON Heungmin scored another goal at the empty goal post when Neuer was out at the field.
