The 7th and 8th place play-off match of Algarve Cup 2018 was cancelled due to a heavy rain on the stadium. Korea Republic Women’s National Football Team’s striker JI Soyun failed to make her 100th appearance for the team
The national team was supposed to play the 7th and 8th place play-off match against Norway on March 8 at Albufeira Stadium, Portugal. However the failure on the draining system due to the shower on the day made the pitch incapable of holding a match.
To quote the local staff “It was a swimming pool”. Nevertheless the first half of the match was played under the poor condition. Players were not able to control the ball nor their body properly. Water puddles were everywhere and it was only a matter of time before someone got injured.
The rain became more severe at the second half and the pitch of course didn’t get any better. Eventually, both teams agreed to cancel the match.
According to the hosting staff, the match was completely cancelled as it had been stopped before the 60th minute. The finals between the Netherlands and Sweden was also cancelled for the same occasion. Both teams became the co-champion. Korea Republic and Norway are sharing the platform for the 7th place.
Striker JI Soyun’s opportunity to join the century club was also missed due to the cancellation. The striker was in the starting eleven for the match and played the full first half but has to wait until the Women’s Asian Cup on April for the title as this match will not be counted.
