KFA decided to cancel a contract with Ulrich Steilike, the Coach of National Football Team under mutual agreement.

KFA held a technical committee meeting at NFC(National Football Center) in Paju, June 15 and canceled a contract with Coach Steilike. As a result, Coach Steilike, who started his post since September 2014 took down a baton of the National Team coach after serving 2 years and 9 months. Also Lee Yongsoo, a Chairman of the technical committee announced his intention to resign. The next coach will be decided when the new chairman of the technical committee is appointed.

"Since the appointment of Coach Steilike, we have continuously tried for the advancement of Korea football. However, we did not get the expected outcome in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia and we decided to cancel the contract under the mutual agreement," said Chairman Lee at an interview after the meeting. He also added "I decided to resign from the Chairman of the technical committee because I didn't put all my efforts for a complete preparation while I had to drive the team. As a result, I admit that I'm responsible for not meeting the expected outcome."

Chairman Lee made it clear about the appointment of the preceeding coach "the scope is limited due to shortage of time. At the moment, I think a Korean coach will have to be appointed. The technical committee members will suggest who will be appropriate." He explained about the reason to limit the candidate scope to Korean coach is because "there is a shortage of time. It is not a limitation of administration process or negotiation. If we appoint a foreign coach, he will not fully understand Korean players in a short period. With a Korean coach, he will have an understanding of the players playing in the National Team."

With two more matches left in the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia Asian Qualifiers, Korea is recording 2nd ranking with 13 winning points (4 wins, 1 tie, 3 losses). However, there is only 1 point difference with Uzbekistan, which is in ranking 3 (12 winning points, 4 wins, 4 losses) and the qualification for the World Cup Finals is not guaranteed. In order to be qualified for the World Cup Finals, the team must be ranked in 2nd place in a group in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers. The 3rd ranking team will have to go through a playoff. Korea will have a home match against Iran on August 31, away match against Uzbekistan on September 5.
